Book value is the capital amount at which property is shown on the account books of a corporation or individual. It is the net amount at which an asset is carried on the books or reported in financial statements; the asset's cost at adquisition, reduced by the amount of accumulated depreciation on the asset. Market value may be considerably less than or greater than book value.
